Teacher Education in Tanzania

CTI developed and presented a series of workshops for faculty from teacher training colleges in the northern and western zones of Tanzania. Starting in 2002, the program focused on teaching methods for active learning and critical thinking. A series of four week-long trainings was delivered over an academic year, with the participants trying out and adapting methods between the workshops, and incorporating the content of the training to their own classrooms--in many of which teachers worked with upwards of 80 or 100 students, with few books. Later in the project, CTI worked with the Tanzanian Ministry of Education and Culture on a B/C Teacher Upgrade Programme, a distance learning initiative aimed at 53,000 teachers who needed to upgrade their academic qualifications for service in the classroom.

CTI also served in an advisory capacity to the Children’s Book Project, an initiative begun by CODE of Canada and now an independent NGO promoting the production of books for children and the training of teachers to work with children’s literature.

CTI’s work was supported by the International Reading Association and UNESCO.
