Children’s Book Production & Emergent Literacy in Georgia
In the Caucasus, CTI has been in conducting a series of workshops for writers and illustrators to produce a series of more than twenty titles of books for beginning readers. The host institution is the Family, Education, and Community Foundation, a Georgian NGO that also manages the RWCT project in Georgia. The books are written at “stair-stepped” levels of difficulty, similar to the books developed by Wendy Pye of New Zealand and used in reading materials around the world, such as the Sunshine books and Wright Group books.
CTI trainers are also working with teachers in Tbilisi to introduce techniques of assessing young readers and designing responsive instruction for them.
Both the book production and the teacher training initiatives are meant for teachers throughout the Republic of Georgia; but there is a special emphasis on Georgia’s populations of Armenian and Azeri students. For these groups, CTI is also working with the Family, Education, and Community Foundation in a teacher training project aimed at teaching Georgian as a second language.
Our work in Georgia is fully supported by the Family, Education, and Community Foundation.
